Adapalene
Also known as: Differin, Adapalene 0.1%, Adapalene 0.3%
The first OTC retinoid that matches prescription tretinoin on acne results โ and the one dermatologists reach for first when sensitivity is a concern.
What It Does
Deep Dive
Adapalene is a third-generation retinoid with selective binding to retinoic acid receptors (RAR-ฮฒ and RAR-ฮณ), which is why it outperforms retinol on acne while causing less irritation than tretinoin. A 2018 Cochrane review found it matches tretinoin on acne reduction with significantly better tolerability. Unlike tretinoin, it does not degrade in sunlight, so morning-or-night flexibility is real. Contraindicated in pregnancy (all retinoids are). Available OTC in the US as Differin Gel 0.1% since 2016 โ before that, every real retinoid required a prescription. Expect purge at weeks 2-6 (pushing existing microcomedones to the surface), full results at 12 weeks. Pair with benzoyl peroxide in morning, adapalene at night, for the derm-favorite stack.
