Azelaic Acid
Also known as: nonanedioic acid, AzA
Azelaic acid is arguably the most underrated active in skincare. It treats acne, fades hyperpigmentation, calms rosacea, and is safe for pregnancy โ a combination of benefits almost no other ingredient can claim. Dermatologists love it; social media mostly ignores it.
What It Does
Deep Dive
The Multi-Tasker
Azelaic acid is a naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid with an unusually broad spectrum of benefits. It's antibacterial (kills acne-causing bacteria), anti-inflammatory (calms redness and swelling), anti-keratinizing (prevents pore clogging), and inhibits tyrosinase (fades dark spots). Few ingredients can legitimately claim efficacy across this many concerns.
The Rosacea Champion
Azelaic acid is one of the few ingredients with FDA approval for rosacea treatment. At 15%, it significantly reduces the papules, pustules, and redness associated with rosacea. It's generally better tolerated than metronidazole in clinical comparisons.
Safe in Pregnancy
While retinoids, many acids, and several other actives are contraindicated during pregnancy, azelaic acid is classified as Category B โ considered safe for use during pregnancy. This makes it one of the few effective acne and hyperpigmentation treatments available to pregnant individuals.
Why It's Under-Hyped
Azelaic acid doesn't have a catchy marketing story. It's not 'from snails' or 'volcanic' or 'fermented.' It's a simple molecule with solid clinical evidence, which apparently isn't enough to trend on social media. This is the skincare community's loss โ dermatologists have been recommending it for decades.
