The brand behind the vitamin C serum every derm name-drops. CE Ferulic is the industry reference for a reason, but the price-to-performance curve gets steep fast beyond the hero products. If you buy one thing, buy the antioxidant.
Strengths
- + CE Ferulic is genuinely the benchmark L-ascorbic acid serum
- + Clinical data backs most claims
- + Dermatologist-trusted for 25+ years
Weaknesses
- โ Punishing prices
- โ Packaging is clinical-beige with zero personality
- โ Most products are fine, not transcendent
The SkinCeuticals Story
Founded by Duke University photoaging researcher Dr. Sheldon Pinnell in 1997, SkinCeuticals commercialised the now-famous patent on 15% L-ascorbic acid + 1% vitamin E + 0.5% ferulic acid โ the formulation now known as CE Ferulic. Acquired by L'Orรฉal in 2005, the brand remains the gold standard for derm-office retail antioxidant serums. Minimalist, scientific, and unapologetically expensive.

C E Ferulic
The benchmark vitamin C serum the entire industry measures itself against. 15% L-ascorbic acid + 1% vitamin E + 0.5% ferulic acid โ the Duke University antioxidant patent that spawned a thousand dupes. $182 is painful, but the 20-year clinical dataset on photoaging reversal is unmatched. Every derm office in America has a bottle on the shelf.

Phloretin CF
The CE Ferulic for combination/oily skin. Phloretin CF replaces tocopherol with phloretin (an apple-derived antioxidant), keeping the 10% L-ascorbic acid + 0.5% ferulic acid backbone but with a lighter, less oil-leaning texture. Better for oily, combination, and acne-prone skin where CE Ferulic feels heavy. Same antioxidant network in the basket โ vitamin C primary, phloretin secondary, ferulic stabilising โ and the same 4 a.m. orange-mid-tone shift that signals oxidation when it's gone too far. Not cheaper than CE Ferulic but worth it if your skin pushes back against the original.
