Thermal Spring Water
Also known as: Eau Thermale, Thermal water, Mineral spring water
The marketing spine of French pharmacy skincare — and the one claim that actually has clinical receipts.
What It Does
Deep Dive
'Eau thermale' is the water phase that defines French pharmacy skincare: Avène (Sainte-Odile), La Roche-Posay (selenium-rich), Vichy (volcanic, 15 minerals), Uriage (isotonic), each with its own spring, mineral profile, and protected geographic origin. Why care: the microbiome and mineral composition of each spring is distinct — Avène's is rich in Aqua Dolomiae bacteria fractions, La Roche-Posay's in selenium (antioxidant), Vichy's in bicarbonate. Clinical trials exist — especially on Avène and La Roche-Posay — showing reduced irritation in atopic dermatitis, post-laser skin, and reactive skin. Not a miracle: the effect is real but modest, and the bottled face-mist format has less minerality than the spring itself. Still, it's the rare case where the story beneath the marketing holds up.
