Glycerin
Also known as: Glycerine, Glycerol
The quietly indispensable humectant. Not sexy, just effective — and in almost every good cream you already own.
What It Does
Deep Dive
Glycerin is the workhorse humectant of modern cosmetics, present in a staggering majority of moisturisers, toners, and serums. It pulls water from the dermis and the environment into the stratum corneum, plumping the surface and softening texture. Unlike hyaluronic acid, it also strengthens barrier function by stabilising intracellular lipids — which is why it shows up in virtually every barrier-repair cream from CeraVe to Dr. Jart+. It is non-comedogenic, non-sensitising, pregnancy-safe, and compatible with essentially every other active. The only time to notice glycerin is when it is not there.
