Withania somnifera is THE Ayurvedic adaptogen, used for 3,000+ years for resilience, sleep, and vitality. In the past decade it went mainstream globally as a stress supplement โ sales ballooned, and the topical skincare category followed. The chemistry: withanolides (unique steroidal lactones) show anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity in vitro, plus some evidence for promoting collagen synthesis in fibroblast culture. Topical clinical data on humans is still thin. Where it works best: brightening/calming night oils, masks targeting stressed or reactive skin, and blended Ayurvedic formulations.
