What It Does
Deep Dive
Kumkumadi (named for 'kumkuma' โ saffron) is a classical Ayurvedic 'tailam' (medicated oil) documented in the Ashtanga Hridayam, a 6th-century medical text. A true kumkumadi blend steeps saffron, turmeric, manjistha, lotus, vetiver, and up to two dozen other botanicals in a sesame/almond oil base for weeks. The evidence base is 1500 years of tradition + modern studies on the individual actives (saffron's crocin is a documented tyrosinase inhibitor; turmeric's curcumin is a documented anti-inflammatory). Clinical trials on the full blend are limited but promising for mild hyperpigmentation and dullness. Buyer beware: cheap kumkumadi oils substitute synthetic yellow dye for real saffron. Look for brands that publish the saffron source and percentage.
