Silicones (Dimethicone, Cyclomethicone, etc.)
Also known as: Dimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, Cyclomethicone
The villainized inert molecule that's actually fine โ silicones sit on skin, smooth texture, help other actives, and rinse off with normal cleanser.
What It Does
Deep Dive
Silicones in skincare (mostly dimethicone and its cousins) are chemically inert, sit on the skin surface in a breathable film, and help with texture, glide, and moisture retention. "Clean beauty" marketing positions them as clogging or suffocating โ neither is true at normal skincare concentrations. They can cause build-up in hair with silicone-heavy products but face skincare is fine. If you simply don't like the slippery feel, skip them. If you're avoiding for "health" reasons, the science isn't there.
