Manjistha
Also known as: Rubia cordifolia, Indian Madder
The ruby-red Ayurvedic root called 'the queen of blood purifiers' โ clinical data is thin, tradition is 3,000 years deep.
What It Does
Deep Dive
Rubia cordifolia is a climbing vine whose roots yield a deep red dye (it was literally the source of 'Turkey red' textile dye for centuries). In Ayurveda, manjistha is the paradigm 'raktashodhaka' โ blood purifier โ prescribed topically and internally for acne, melasma, and dull complexion. Modern cosmetic chemistry likes it for two active classes: anthraquinones (with antimicrobial activity) and purpurin (a tyrosinase inhibitor in vitro). Clinical evidence in humans is limited but suggestive for mild brightening. It's a cornerstone of Ayurvedic brands like Kama Ayurveda and Forest Essentials, usually blended into face oils, ubtans, and brightening serums. Can stain fabrics and pale skin temporarily โ wash-off formats forgive this.
