Allantoin
Also known as: Comfrey extract (Symphytum officinale)
The quiet healer — hiding in pimple patches, aftersun balms, and nearly every "barrier repair" cream you've ever met.
What It Does
Deep Dive
Allantoin is a small molecule originally derived from comfrey root but now almost universally synthesised. It is cell-proliferative (meaning it accelerates natural skin turnover) and mildly keratolytic, which is why it shows up so consistently in post-procedure and wound-care formulas. Dermatologist mainstay for rosacea, post-peel, post-laser, and eczema-prone skin — and the reason so many cheap German and American drugstore creams punch above their weight. Zero downsides beyond being boring.
