What is Skin Microbiome?
Bacteria, fungi, mites on skin
The skin microbiome is the population of bacteria, fungi, and mites (Demodex) living on healthy skin. Dominant species include Staphylococcus epidermidis (good), Cutibacterium acnes (neutral to problematic), Malassezia (yeast โ neutral to problematic). A healthy microbiome supports barrier function and immune modulation. Over-cleansing, over-exfoliating, and broad-spectrum antimicrobials disrupt it. 'Microbiome-friendly' skincare avoids harsh surfactants and includes prebiotics or probiotics.
