Lars Fredriksson spent two decades in the Swedish beauty industry before founding Verso in Stockholm in 2013 with a thesis that only a Scandinavian minimalist could love: most skincare routines contain too many products, most products contain too many ingredients, and most ingredients are included for marketing rather than efficacy. Verso would be the antidote — a brand built around a single active technology, packaged in a range small enough to fit on one bathroom shelf, and designed to make the elaborate multi-step routines of the beauty industry feel redundant.

The single active technology is Retinol 8 — Verso's patented retinoid complex that the brand claims is eight times more effective than standard retinol. The claim is specific: Retinol 8 uses a stabilised form of retinyl acetate that, according to Verso's research, converts more efficiently into retinoic acid (the biologically active form of vitamin A) within the skin. The "8x" refers to this conversion efficiency — the idea that you need eight times less product to achieve the same retinoid effect, which in turn means less irritation, less sensitivity, and less of the redness and peeling that cause consumers to abandon retinoids.

The Swedish design philosophy

Everything about Verso communicates reduction. The packaging is white, transparent, and geometric — vessels that look like they belong in a design museum rather than a bathroom. The product names are numbers: Day Cream No. 3, Night Cream No. 4, Nourishing Cream No. 5, Hydration Serum No. 6, Super Eye Serum No. 7, Eye Reviver No. 10. The numbered system implies a logical order — a designed sequence rather than an accumulation of impulse purchases.
