Born inside esthetician education (The International Dermal Institute), Dermalogica still feels more professional-facial than consumer brand โ which is both its charm and its limitation. Daily Microfoliant is the one everyone owns.
Strengths
- + Strong esthetician pedigree
- + Daily Microfoliant is a deservedly iconic product
- + Good at sensitive and barrier-friendly formulations
Weaknesses
- โ Product naming is clinical to the point of unmemorable
- โ Packaging feels 1990s professional
- โ Prices higher than equivalent formulas elsewhere
The Dermalogica Story
Dermalogica was founded in 1986 by Jane Wurwand, a British-born esthetician who had trained in Europe and noticed that American skin-therapy education was thin. She launched The International Dermal Institute first, then Dermalogica as the in-treatment product line. Acquired by Unilever in 2015, the brand remains the default retail line sold behind treatment-room doors worldwide. ProSkin 60 facials are effectively Dermalogica commercials with results.

Daily Microfoliant
The enzyme exfoliant powder that became a professional-esthetician legend. Activate with water, massage 60 seconds, rinse โ the rice bran + papain enzyme formula brightens without any acid aggression. 30 years of cult status among facialists, and the formula hasn't needed to change because it works exactly as advertised.

Special Cleansing Gel
Dermalogica's iconic foaming gel cleanser โ sold continuously since 1986 as the brand's flagship SKU and a fixture in dermatologist offices and aesthetic clinics worldwide. Built around naturally-foaming Quillaja Saponaria bark extract (rather than harsh sulfates), with calming balm mint and lavender. Sits in the rare category of skincare products that have outlasted entire era cycles โ the brand's 'professional-grade' positioning is genuinely earned, not a marketing claim.
