HIFU / Ultherapy (Non-Surgical Lift)

HIFU uses focused ultrasound energy to create micro-coagulation points (tiny thermal injury zones) at precise depths — 1.5mm (epidermis), 3mm (dermis), and 4.5mm (SMAS layer, the fibromuscular layer beneath skin). These controlled micro-injuries trigger the body's wound healing cascade: fibroblasts produce new collagen to repair the zones. Unlike lasers, HIFU bypasses the skin surface entirely, which means zero surface damage. The collagen remodeling process takes 3–6 months, which is when results peak.

Treatment takes 60–90 minutes for a full face. Numbing cream is applied 45–60 minutes prior. The HIFU transducer is placed on skin with ultrasound gel and activated across a grid pattern. Pain level is significant — many describe it as sharp, hot pinching sensations (6–8/10). Pain is brief per zone but accumulates over the session. Immediately post: mild swelling and tenderness, possible temporary numbness. Return to normal appearance within 24–48 hours.

Ultherapy (developed by Merz Aesthetics) received FDA clearance in 2009 and remains the only FDA-cleared device for non-surgical brow lifting. In Korea, a dozen competing devices have been developed: Doublo, Ultraformer, Shurink — Korean devices are often as effective at a fraction of the Western price. A full-face Ultherapy session costs $2,000–4,000 in the US; the Korean equivalent (Shurink, Ultraformer) runs ₩200,000–600,000 ($150–450). This price gap drives significant medical tourism.
