Pearl Extract
Also known as: pearl-powder, hydrolyzed-conchiolin-protein, nacre
Crushed freshwater pearls, dissolved to amino acids. 2,000 years of Chinese and Japanese skin rituals, now the flex ingredient in SK-II, Tatcha, and La Mer-adjacent brands.
What It Does
Deep Dive
Pearl has been a skin-ritual ingredient in China and Japan since the Tang dynasty โ Empress Wu Zetian reportedly took powdered pearl daily. Modern cosmetic pearl extract (hydrolyzed conchiolin) delivers a small amount of calcium, amino acids like methionine and glycine, and a trace of radiance-enhancing shimmer when finely milled. Clinically the evidence for dramatic brightening is thin; sensorially it reads as a luxurious, glow-adjacent addition. Tatcha's The Pearl tinted eye treatment, SK-II's Genoptics, and Cle de Peau's luxury tier all feature pearl prominently. A heritage-and-story ingredient more than a functional active โ but the rituals built around it are real.
