Eucalyptus
Also known as: Eucalyptus globulus, Eucalyptol, Cineole
Australia's national scent. Brilliant in spa steams and body care; trickier on faces than the wellness marketing lets on.
What It Does
Deep Dive
There are 700+ eucalyptus species, all Australian natives. The cosmetic heavy-hitter is E. globulus, whose oil is 70โ80% 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) โ the compound responsible for the unmistakable scent and for most of its antimicrobial/decongestant properties. Studies support its activity against acne-adjacent bacteria and mild comedogenic effects. The catch: cineole is a known contact sensitiser at essential-oil concentrations, which is why most responsible formulators use it in wash-offs, body products, and steam rituals rather than leave-on face serums. If you see it high on the INCI of a face cream, be skin-aware.
