The TikTok version
"Alcohol dries out your skin and destroys your barrier. Avoid it at all costs." OK, which alcohol? That's the question no one bothers to ask.
Three kinds of alcohol, three completely different effects
1. Drying alcohols (simple chain) โ ethanol, SD alcohol, alcohol denat, isopropyl alcohol, methanol. These are the ones the TikTok crowd means. Fast-evaporating, volatile, and at high percentages they strip sebum and disrupt the barrier. Real issue on dry, sensitive, or compromised skin.
2. Fatty alcohols โ cetyl alcohol, cetearyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol. Despite the name, these are emulsifying waxes derived from plant oils. They stabilise formulas and soften skin. Nearly every moisturiser contains them. Zero drying effect. These are not the alcohols you think they are.
3. Aromatic alcohols โ benzyl alcohol, phenoxyethanol. Preservatives and solvents. At cosmetic concentrations, non-drying and generally non-irritating. Safe for sensitive skin.
Why formulators use simple alcohol anyway
Because it works. Denatured alcohol:
- Acts as a penetration enhancer (helps actives absorb)
- Delivers a matte finish that oily/combo skin genuinely wants
- Dissolves ingredients that water can't handle
- Boosts preservation (antimicrobial at โฅ20%)
Japanese lotions, American astringents, Korean sun essences โ all use it strategically. At reasonable percentages, in formulas designed around it, it is not the villain.
When to actually avoid it
- Dry or mature skin โ barrier already thin
- Rosacea or eczema โ reactive vascular response
- Post-procedure โ anything disruptive is too disruptive
- Anywhere the alcohol is near the top of the INCI list on a leave-on product
When to relax
Alcohol denat in position six or seven of an acne toner, or in a sunscreen where it's making the formula sit flat โ mostly fine. Do not rearrange your shelf over it.
The honest verdict
Blanket alcohol-phobia is lazy thinking. Alcohol at the wrong concentration in the wrong formula will hurt your barrier. Alcohol in a correctly designed formula is often doing more good than harm. Read the INCI list; skip the panic.

BABร Laboratorios: the pediatrician-founded brand that built sensitive-skin expertise from babies to adults
BABร Laboratorios was born from pediatric dermatology โ a Spanish dermo-cosmetic brand that began by formulating for the most sensitive skin imaginable (newborns and infants) and then applied that same uncompromising gentleness to products for adults. The Stop AKN line tackles acne without aggression. The Hydra Calm range soothes reactive skin with prebiotic-enriched formulas. The Pediatric line remains the gold standard for baby skincare in Spanish pharmacies. From its base in Valencia, BABร competes alongside ISDIN and Sesderma as a pillar of the Spanish pharmacy skincare tradition โ the brand where sensitivity is not a limitation but a founding principle.
