What is Melasma?

Hormone-triggered hyperpigmentation

Melasma is a specific type of hyperpigmentation driven by hormones (pregnancy, birth control, HRT) and amplified by heat and light (UV + visible). Appears as symmetrical, map-like patches on cheeks, forehead, upper lip. Distinct from PIH โ€” doesn't respond to the same protocols. Treatment requires: tinted mineral SPF with iron oxides, azelaic acid, topical tranexamic acid, niacinamide, and avoidance of heat/UV triggers. Often lifelong management, not cure.
