Pimple Patches (Hydrocolloid)

Hydrocolloid technology was developed for wound care in the 1980s. The material — a gel-forming agent in an adhesive matrix — creates a moist wound environment. When applied to a whitehead, it draws out the fluid through osmotic pressure while the adhesive seals the area from bacteria and touching. The white "gunk" you see on the patch when removed is dried exudate, not the patch material melting.

Use on open or freshly extracted whiteheads for best results. They have limited effect on closed comedones, nodules, or cysts. Cleanse and dry skin completely (patches don't adhere to damp skin). Press firmly for 30 seconds. Wear for at least 6 hours, ideally overnight. Replace when the center goes fully white and opaque. Do not leave on for more than 24 hours — the patch can macerate skin.

COSRX Acne Pimple Master Patch (launched 2014) is often credited with popularizing the modern pimple patch globally, though hydrocolloid wound dressings were already used by Korean dermatologists before that.
