Octisalate
Also known as: Ethylhexyl Salicylate, 2-Ethylhexyl salicylate
The least-controversial chemical UVB filter in your US sunscreen — quietly doing its job, staying out of headlines.
What It Does
Deep Dive
Octisalate is a mild UVB filter with excellent photostability and low irritation potential. It rarely pulls its weight alone (SPF around 5 at max concentration), but it's valuable as an oil-soluble solvent that helps dissolve the bulkier filters — avobenzone, octocrylene, homosalate — into a clear, spreadable formula. Unlike octinoxate or oxybenzone, it hasn't been flagged in reef-ban legislation or major endocrine studies. If you're trying to parse a US SPF ingredient list and you see octisalate, it's the least of the things to worry about. It's also commonly found in tinted balms and lip SPFs because it doesn't sting.
