Activated Charcoal
Also known as: Activated Carbon, Carbo Medicinalis, Bamboo Charcoal, Binchotan
The ingredient that built a thousand peel-off masks and TikTok trends. Does something real (adsorb oil) but never the "detox" miracle the marketing sells.
What It Does
Deep Dive
Activated carbon is produced by heating coconut shells or bamboo in the absence of oxygen, creating a massive porous surface area (one gram has roughly the surface area of a tennis court). That porosity lets it adsorb โ physically trap โ molecules like excess sebum and sweat on contact. In rinse-off cleansers and wash-off masks, that's a real mechanism with visible results on oily t-zones. The "pulling toxins out of your skin" narrative is nonsense โ your skin doesn't absorb toxins inward, and charcoal molecules are far too large to penetrate the stratum corneum. Peel-off black masks work primarily by mechanical adhesion, not charcoal magic, and can tear the protective vellus hairs and lipid layer if overused. Safe in pregnancy. The clinical evidence for oil control is modest but real; the evidence for acne treatment specifically is weak โ BHA does the real work when paired.
